The Medieval Festival

The Annual Lady Day Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever as the committee plan a five night extravaganza from Friday 11th to Tuesday 15th August. Following the tremendous success of last year’s Festival we’d like to thank everyone who helped, everyone who took part and especially all those who sponsored us. The Medieval Festival is getting very well known for its “huge local contribution” within reason all costumes and equipment are made in Athenry (even Battering Rams!) and all participants in the Jousting and the Battle(with a couple of exceptions) were natives of Athenry.

Last year’s battle was shown on Norwegian TV, and as a result we have an enquiry for a Norwegian marching Band for 1996.

Favourite Events

The tremendously popular Miamim Cajun Band will be opening the Festival followed by different types of music from traditional and pop to Line Dancing. There will be two childrens days incorporating all the old favourite events, treasure hunt, teddy bear’s picnic, sports day etc. as well as a gala pet show, lots of drama. puppetry and magic.

Attack at Athenry Castle

The Medieval Fayre will take place on Sunday 13th August, with lots of exciting events in the afternoon culminating in a spectacular Jousting display by the famous Knights of Athenry.

There are rumours throughout the land that the ferocious Red Hugh O’Donnell is planning to attack Athenry Castle and remove those Norman invaders at last. Watch out for Fireworks if these feared raiders from the North are coming-the year is 1597!

Red Hugh is looking for strong Athenry warriors to help him wage terrible war on the hated de Birminghams. Any warriors out there who would like to grow their hair and/or beards will be given honourable titles and a share of the spoils of the battle. However, clean shaven warriors are also very acceptable.

Festival Appeal

Athenry Festival Committee urgently require volunteers to help with the different activities during the Festival. We also urgently need volunteer carpenters, builders and painters for Backdrops and Siege Weapons. Costume makers and knitters are also required. In a few weeks we will be looking for drummers, with or without drums and volunteers for the weapon workshop.

The Medieval Festival costs more and more money each year and apart from sponsorship from Guinness all money is donated from businesses in town. The committee would like to thank very sincerely all those businesses who sponsor us so generously. However if the Festival is to expand we urgently need more money. There will be a church gate collection for the Festival in early July and we ask the people of Athenry to give generously
