Courts and Crime 1801 – 1849

Athenry Corporation Book (1781 – 1840) lists court cases tried in the town’s Tholsel, a building probably similar in structure to the Galway Tholsel pictured above. Tholsels were nearly always found on the principal street of major towns. There is no trace of the Athenry Tholsel, but as Cross Street was the main street of Athenry during the life of the Corporation, we can reasonably assume that it was located in or near the Market square, most likely where the Ulster Bank is now situated.
