Meet Tony Corley, whose feat in scoring seventeen points from the full-back position was the outstanding feature of Galwegians big win over Corinthians in the Glynn Memorial Trophy match at the Sportsground on St. Patrick’s Day. Tony’s “bag” was a mixed one, for he scored two tries, kicked a penalty goal, and landed four conversions.
The Athenry-born footballer’s versatility has made him a very valuable asset to his club. Tony started his senior rugby career with U.C.G. before throwing in his lot with Galwegians, and he helped the students to many major successes before continuing his winning way with the Glenina outfit. He has featured at full-back, scrum-half, out-half, centre and wing-threequarter and appears very much at home in any position he occupies.
In addition to his success at club has featured prominently in representative football and has several Connacht “caps” to his credit. The Wegian player is without any shadow of a doubt the leading scorer from the full-back position in Irish rugby this season, and we are awaiting the end of the season to give his full total of points.
Handball Champion Too
In addition to being a fine rugby player, Tony Corley is an expert handballer, and has figured prominently in the Co. Galway and Irish Championships with the Athenry club. An Irish champion in 1965 he was nominated as one of Co. Galway’s Top Ten Sports Stars of that year, and now six years later, he is still at the top of the Galway sporting scene.
