Athenry Lawn Tennis Club elected the following officers and Committee for the coming year at their annual meeting in the Athenry Town Hall on Tuesday evening:

Mr. Mal. Carney, Chairman; Mr. J. Geraghty, Vice-Chairman; Mr. L. V. Hession, Treasurer. Messrs. J, O’Rourke, and P. Cronnelly, Joint Secretaries. Committee: Messrs. P. Walsh, R. Holmes and M. McLaughlin.

The meeting decided to recommend to the working committee the acquisition of additional courts.

On the proposal of Mr. J. Geraghty, seconded by Mr. J. O’Rourke, a vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing officers of the Committee for the efficient manner in which they handled the business of the Club during the past year.

On Sunday next Athenry Lawn Tennis Club will be the guests of the Tuam Club. A Tournament will commence at 3.30 and will be followed by a Social in the Pavilion to which all General and Pavilion Members are cordially invited.

The Athenry Lawn Tennis Club opens its fifth season on Sunday next, 11th. inst, when the courts will be available for play. Since its establishment the Club has made great progress and it has now over sixty members. The energetic committee, one of whom is a Tuam man, Mr. Jack Geraghty, is constantly making improvements. For the coming season the grounds have received special attention, and the Pavilion has been entirely renovated. Everything is done for the members’ convenience and the Club deserves its popularity. It is claimed that the grounds and Pavilion are as good as can be found in any provincial town in Ireland. The Tennis Club has every right to be proud of their achievements and the present season promises to be equally successful as past years.

The first inter-club tournament of the season takes place on Sunday next when Tuam entertain Athenry Lawn Tennis Club at Ballymote. Following the Tournament there will be a Social in the Pavilion.  The Committee has decided that only General and Pavilion members will be admitted in future to the functions held by the Club. Applications for General or Pavilion Membership should be made.to the Hon. Secretary, Mr. P. J. Brady, and as the membership rule regarding attendance at social functions will be strictly enforced, it is expected that there will he a large roll of Pavilion Members this year.

Mr. Michael McLoughlin, Prospect, was made an honorary life member of the Athenry Lawn Tennis club when the club held its recent annual general meeting,

Members paid tribute to Mr. McLoughlin for his lengthy and untiring efforts to foster tennis in Athenry.

Officers for the coming year were elected as follows: President (unopposed), T. Atkinson; Hon. Treas (unopposed) Miss Clemmie McGuinness, Hon. Sec. (unopposed), Mr. M. MeLoughlin. Committee: Messrrs. E Somers, M. Dempsey and S. Coon, and the Misses C. Dempsey and R. Fitzsinmons. S. Coen will be men’s captain during the 1952 season and Miss I’, Murphy was elected lady counter-part.

At the annual general meeting of Athenry Lawn Tennis Club, which was held last week in the Canton Hall, the following officers wore elected: President; Mr. Tom Atkinson; Treasurer, Miss Clemmie McGuinncss; Secretary, Mr. Michael McLoughlin; Assistant Secretary, Mr. E. Somers. Committee members: Misses R. Fitzsimons and C. Dempsey and Messrs. C. O’ Grady, S. Coen and M. Dempsey. It was decided to open the 1954 tennis season on May 2nd.

Athenry Lawn Tennis Club entered the third round of the Connacht Junior Championship when they defeated Castlebar on Thursday last. Representing Athenry were: Sean Dempsey. Christy O’Grady and Tom Atkinson and Misses G. McGuinness, M. Reynolds and Ann Kelly. The final score was: Athenry 5; Castiebar 2.

The Athenry Club now meet Loughrea in the third round on Sunday next.

12.07.1958

Competitions for participation in the Pitman Cup are taking place at present amongst members of the Athenry Lawn Tennis Club. This competition is confined to youths under 18 years. The following now play, off in the boys’ event to select the best three to represent the club; V Doherty, M. Qulnn, S. Glynn. P. Waldron, M. Kennedy and S. Donohue; and in the girls’ event the following now play off for their three places: the Misses C. Corbett. C. Coffey. C. Whelan. K Glynn and M. Corley.

Athenry Lawn Tennis Club has opened what promises to be a very successful season. Membership is much larger than in previous years and the courts are in splendid form.

Miss C. McGuinness. has been selected to represent Connacht. for the seventh successive year, in the Inter-Provincial Tournament at Galway on Saturday

The Club has also entered teams in the Senior and Junior “Pitman” Competitions this season.

At a recent meeting of Athenry Lawn Tennis Chub, the following Officers were elected: Chairman: T. Atkinson; Treasurer: Miss C. McGulnness; Secretary: Miss R. Glynn. Committee: O. More-O’Farrell, K. Whelan, 8. Dempsey and M. Dempsey.

The Club has an outing arranged for Loughrea on Sunday next.

Several members (both senior and juvenile) of Athenry Lawn Tennis Club are attending lectures and demonstrations by John Home, the Australian coach, at Galway Lawn Tennis.

The draw has already been made for “The Dempsey Cup” and the first round of matches will be played during the coming weekend.

Athenry Lawn Tennis Club was well represented in the Galway Open Tennis Week when Miss Clem McGuinness qualified for the final of the Ladies Open Tournament and Miss Celia Corbett reached the final of the Ladies Handicap. Although both were beaten, they put up great fights and proved that the Athenry Tennis Club is among the foremost group in the county,

20.05.1961

Athenry Lawn Tennis Club was formally opened for the season, on Sunday last. Two members of this Club have been selected to play for Connacht in the Inter-Provincial Championships to be held in Belfast on Sunday, May 28th. They are Miss Clem McGuinness (No 1 Lady) and Mr. Sean Dempsey (No. 4 Gent). Mr. Tom Atkinson, also of Athenry Club, is non-playing Captain of the Connacht team.
