The appointment of a new Project Manager in January and the success in obtaining funding from FAS, gave the ADC a firm footing to be able to continue to work for the benefit of the Athenry community and enhancement of the environment.The ADC office has established good contacts not only with local community groups but also Galway County Council officials, Councillors,TDs and a variety of government bodies.

Some of the developments that have taken place in 2002 by ADC staff and the important help of our volunteers:

Community

  • Publication of the Athenry Journal twice yearly. The ADC office administers the work of Athenry Voluntary Housing Company, an important project for the people of Athenry.
  • Thanks to Athenry Community Care for providing a location, we are in the process of setting-up a Community Information Technology Centre.

Environment

Lobbying Councillors and TDs to ensure Athenry has a voice.

  • Working with the County Council on a wide variety of issues concerning the quality of life in Athenry
  • . For example:

The new traffic one-way system that is currently on display and should be implemented by February. The location and development of a Re-cycling Centre for effective waste management.

Working closely with the local Community Warden.

Business

  • Providing information and acting as a resource centre for local groups and individuals who wish to start their own business.
  • Currently seeking funding for the development of a Community Enterprise Centre.

What we hope will happen in 2003

There are now seven staff employed at the ADC on various projects (all new jobs in Athenry).

Athenry ADC will continue to flourish and will work for the benefit of all the Athenry community.

Therefore if you need any help or advice we will try to help you or point you in the right direction. The ADC is fortunate enough to have access to a wealth of volunteers who provide help and knowledge.

Athenry Community Maintenance Service

Athenry Community Maintenance Service is a new venture operating from the ADC office.  With the help of FAS through Social Economy funding, four maintenance workers are employed to carry out general maintenance work at reasonable rates. The team is supervised by Christy Williams, a highly qualified and registered painter. Therefore if you need any jobs done – no job too small -call us on: 091 845495.
