April 19, 1913 – LADIES Hurling Club

Athenry has been to the fore in the national movements, and already the young ladies of the town have formed a hurling club. A practice match is to come off on Saturday next and great interest is attached to the important event. There is keen competition as to who will captain and the matter is earnestly occupying the attention of the lady members. Canvassing is proceeding at a stringent pace, but the ballot does not come off until Sunday.

1930-1933

Derrydonnell camogie team beat Headford in the first round of the championship at Athenry. The team consisted of six Poniard sisters. In the first round of the championship Athenry defeated Renvyle. Glynn and Egan were best for Athenry. In the next round Athenry were beaten by Carna by one point.

 1973

Athenry won the county junior camogie title beating Mervue in the final.

1974

Athenry’s camogie team were beaten by Oranmore in the senior championship. Midge Poniard and Ann Donoghue were members of the All-Galway Connacht Camogie team that won the Gael Linn Cup.

1975

The Athenry senior camogie team, although very young, (the oldest player was 21) defeated Oranmore in the County final. The camogie team then defeated the hot favourite Buffers Alley in the All-Ireland Camogie Semi-Final. A point in extra time gave Croagh – Kilfinny (Limerick) a one point victory over Athenry in the All-Ireland Final.

1977

Athenry camogie team won their third county title defeating Ballindereen in the Connaught Final. Then in the All-Ireland Semi-Final at Kenny Park, Athenry defeated Munster champions Ballagran. Athenry were in their third consecutive All-Ireland Club Final and gave a great performance to beat Ulster champions Portglenone by 10-5 to 1-1. A member of the Athenry camogie team Ann Morris was Galway Sports Star for camogie due to her excellent performances during the year.

1978

Athenry camogie team won another county title defeating Castlegar by 4-11 to 0-2. In the All-Ireland Semi-Final they were defeated by Buffers Alley by 2-6 to 0-8.

1979

The camogie team, for the fifth year in succession, were in the All-Ireland Semi-Final. Athenry defeated Portglenone again by 10-7 to 5-2. In the final at Kenny Park Buffers Alley beat Athenry by 2-6 to 1-2. The Athenry team missed many good chances to win.

1982

Heavy rain during a close marking All-Ireland Club Camogie Final did not help Athenry as they were beaten by 2-1 to 0-2 by Buffers Alley. Best for Athenry were Chris Silke, Noreen Treacy, Breda Coady, Una Jordan and Teresa Duane.

1983

Athenry camogie team won the County title after a lapse of two years.
