Description (John O’Donavan’s Townland index 1862):

Turvin family are the proprietors, one-eighth is cultivated, the remainder is rocky pasture. Near its south extremity is a fort called Lismiel and near its north end is a cahir 6 chains west of a village of houses. A triangulation station is located at its north extremity at 138 feet above sea level. Bounded on the north and north-east by Athenry to Galway road. Its general surface varies from 64 to 144 feet above sea level.

Situation (John O’Donavan’s Townland index 1862):

It is situated 2 miles south-west of Athenry bounded on the north by Ballygarraun West, on the west by Gortroe and Greethill, on the south by Killeeneen Parish and on the east by Castleturvin, Millpark and Mulpit.

Clorane is in the Barony of Athenrv and in the B.D. of Greethill. It may also be spelt Cloghraun or Cloghan, which means a Stoney place.

According to Dr. Gosling’s report – there is a ringfort called Lismiel and Southterrain (No, 67). To the North is another fort or Caher and to the West of Clorane is a village of houses.
