You may speak of your crater in Arizona so fair

Or the bottomless punchbowl beside Co. Clare

But both of these wonders, be they ever so rare

With the Lisheenkyle pothole could never compare.

For potholes are potholes, you’re led to believe,

From Slyne Head to Howth Head, Rosmuc to Slieve League,

Its likes we’ve not had since Adam and Eve,

The dimensions you’d swear your eyes do deceive .

The Lighthouse of Pharos, the Collossus of Rhodes,

The statue of Zeus all clothed in gold

And the rest of the wonders of the world so old

Would fit in the pothole in the Lisheenkyle road.

In its depths are the answers to mysteries profound;

The remains of Atlantis and the Baskerville hound,

The Marie Celeste and the worth of the pound,

Are forever entombed in this hole in the ground.

Many seanachies dwell in this village of fame

To the truth of the mystery they each have a claim

But to divulge the answer they always refrain

And so in its depths the secrets remain.

Our pothole committee stands firm and fast

They’ve tourist attraction that can’t be outclassed

The farmers around have a fortune amassed

The milking of cows it will far outlast.

Their slogan as always, come soldier or guard,

Is “we’ll not give an inch a foot nor a yard

For from it we get out salt bacon and lard

And to keep it we’re ready to play our trump card”.

From it they threaten to unleash on us all

Kangaroos from Australia, big cats from Bengal,

Vikings from Denmark, barbarians from Gaul

If their pothole is not preserved by the Dail.
