Moorpark Cemetery is located on the old Castle-Lambert Estate which is now known as Moor; the cemetery is situated in the Barony of Clare and the D.E.D. of Aughrim.

A small graveyard in size, it is enclosed within a wall on the grounds of an Cistersian abbey, which is now in ruins. Outside the cemetery walls, beside the gate into the graveyard, there is an old spring well surrounded by a circular wall. The well is roughly 15ft. deep. There are steps leading down to the well inside the.wail.  We presume the well was a source of water for the abbey.

The field surrounding the well and the cemetery is barren and hilly.  On each corner of the wall surrounding the cemetery there are four small castle-like towers.

The graveyard itself consists of an area of 2 roods. It is not known exactly how many people are buried there. There are, however, two legible headstones, one is the Harte family grave, and the second is Thomas Egan’s. Another grave that of a child named Broderick is also to be seen.

In the centre of the graveyard, there stands a family vault which contains the remains of some of tie Lambert family, (ref. file 45, who were at one time, landlords in Athenry and in the surrounding area.

In 1975 the vault was vandalised and following this a plaque was erected by Hubert Lambert,

LAMBERT   family names in the Mausoleum in Moore burial ground.

Walter Lambert died 10th Aug. 1867. Age 72 years

Mary Jane Lambert died July 1868. Age 37 years.

(The discarded coffin plate shows that Mary Jane Lambert died in April 1868)

Ann Lambert fell asleep in Jesus “nd July, 1897. Age 87 years.

In Dec. 1975 Hubert Lambert and his son Liam came to this place and found that it had been vandalised, To perpetuate the memory of his forebears, Hubert of Vernon Park Clontarf, Dublin had these 3 herein plates made by Mr. Stafford of Dublin.

In May 1977 with the assistance of three of his four sons he fitted these plates. We extend toany member of our sept who may enter this family vault our fraternal greeting.

Hubert Lambert.
