Papal Nuncio’s Visit to the West

Addresses Presented: Athenry Welcome

THE PAPAL NUNCIO, Dr. Paschal Robinson, O.F.M. (left) standing on the platform at Athenry beside the Most Rev. Or. Gilmartin, Archbishop of Tuam (centre) and Dr.Foley, Athenry (right) on his arrival in the West last Friday evening when he travelled to Tuam, visited Croagh Patrick on Sunday, and made a tour of the archdiocese the three following days at the invitation of the Archbishop.
The Most Rev. Dr. Paschal Robinson, Papal Nuncio, was given a great public reception on his arrival in Tuam on Friday evening.

His Excellency had travelled by train from Dublin to Athenry, where he was met by his Grace, the Most Rev. Dr. Gilmartin, with whom the Nuncio exchanged cordial greetings. On the platform was a large number of people who gave his Excellency a warm welcome. Among those present were: Very Rev.Fr. Conroy, P.P.; Rev. Fr. Prendergast, and a number of priests from Esker, as well as prominent lay citizens including Dr. Foley, Mr. S. Brodrick, T.D .; Mr. S. Jordan, T.D.; Mr. T. B. Higgins, Mr. C. Daly who, with others, were presented to his Excellency. The platform was beautifully decorated, the Maltese Cross being prominent. Outside the station his Excellency was greeted with a great cheer from the assembled multitude which escorted his car through the town singing hymn. At points on the road from Athenry to Tuam bonfires were lighted in honour of the Pope’s representative and his Grace the Archbishop as they motored to Tuam……….
